MNS Kuching Branch Bird Group will be organizing a bird watching trip to Kg. Chupak on 28 November 2011 at 7:30am.
One of the nearest and most extensive rice fields around Kuching area, Kg. Chupak/Skudup attract great number of migratory and wetland birds. A number of interesting sightings have come out of the area including Sand Martin (1st record for Borneo for nearly a century), Greater Painted-Snipe (1st for Sarawak), Red-necked Phalarope, Blue-breasted Quail, Black-winged Stilt and Chinese Pond Heron.
There are quite a number of migratory birds there. So why not come over to join us for a fun Public Holiday on Monday.

HOW TO GET THERE Drive up the Kuching/Serian road, passing Siburan town, 18 mils (Jong’s Crocodile Farm) and Beratok town, 22 miles (limestone quarry is opposite the town). Drive further along the road for 2 more miles and you will pass a Shell petrol station on your left. Tapah town is just a kilometer along the road from Shell station. So slow down! Turn into Tapah town and meet at the road side in front of Taman Rekresis Tapah (Town Park) which is next to the Tapah Chinese Primary School. Please be there by 7.15am sharp. Those who are late will have to find their way to Chupak themselves.

TO BRING
Please bring along your binocular, bird guides, pocket-size note pad, hat, sun block and umbrella. Please also remember to wear dull-coloured clothes.

Happy 50th Birthday 1st Kuching and BB Sarawak !

We would like to wish the 1st Kuching Company Happy 50th Birthday and Boys' Brigade in Sarawak Happy 50th Birthday! Thanks Lord for the 50 glorious years of Boys' Brigade ministry in Sarawak and managed to touch the hearts of many youths through the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian character (manliness).

The History

In 1947, Charles Henry Ingka was in Singapore and while studying in St. Andrew's School, he joined the 7th Singapore Company, The Boys' Brigade and became an Officer there.

Back in Sarawak, Mr. Charles saw the need for proper training among Boys and he knew BB is the solution. The idea of setting up a Boys’ Brigade Company was brought up but was met with a strong opposition. With the support of Provost Anthony Perry, Mr. Charles set out to lay the foundation for Boys' Brigade work in Kuching. It was not until July 1961, that the first meeting was held, after a recruitment of the Boys of the confirmation at the St. Thomas's Cathedral. This led to the first Company in East Malaysia and also the first company on the island of Borneo, thus in itself became part of the Boys' Brigade history.

Mr Charles had nothing of BB except that which was in his heart and mind. He had never expected to start Boys' Brigade movement in Kuching or anywhere in Sarawak but HE DID IT!

We would like to announce that SSGT Charles Ting will be leaving us on 24th June 2011 to further his studies abroad. His departure comes with mix feelings. As one of the senior NCO, we are sad but grateful for his contributions, creative, wild and wacky ideas during his tenure in 8th Kuching. We're happy as he's entering another chapter of his life and studying a 'rare' course in his study.

Finally, the 8th Kuching Company would like to wish all the best to SSGT Charles Ting in his study and his life abroad. Do come back and visit us when you are back.

2011 Southern Region Basic & Advanced Drill Camp

Camp Fee: $26 per pax (Boy/Officer)
Closing Date: 10th April 2011 (Sunday) before 12:00 midnight

Terms and Conditions:

Members must serve in company senior section for at least 2 years.
Members (Boys and Officers) must have full sets of Uniform in order to participate in the Southern Regional Drill Camp.
(Advance Drill) Members must have basic drill knowledge (e.g basic drill definitions, formations, squad drill, paying compliments, etc.)
Members must fulfill uniform requirements as stated in BBM website (e.g not dyed or long hair allowed, no long fingernails allowed). An inspection will be carried out upon registration to make sure members fulfill uniform requirements. Members with long hair or long nails will receive FREE haircut and nail cut on the spot upon registration. Same rules applied to participating officers.
Boys are deemed to be campers throughout the training camp.
Officers are encouraged to stay-in throughout the camp and only allowed to leave the Training Camp when the lessons of the day has concluded.
The Organizing Committee reserves the right to expel any Member from participating the Drill Camp if he failed to abide by the terms and conditions.
No refund will be made if a Member is unable to attend the Training Camp, but a replacement entry is only allowed if notice is given before 10th April 2011.
The Organizing Committee reserves the right to reject any application found not suitable and fee will be refunded in full if registration was done before 10th April 2011.

Reveille

"Reveille" is a bugle call most often associated with the military; it is chiefly used to wake military personnel at sunrise. The name comes from "réveille" (or "réveil"), the French word for "wake up".

British Army Cavalry and Royal Horse Artillery Regiments sound a separate call to the Infantry version also known as Reveille (Trumpet & Bugle Calls for the British Army 1966).

The tune used in the Commonwealth of Nations is different from the one used in the United States, but they are used in analogous ways: to ceremonially start the day.

In modern times, the U.S. Military plays (or sounds) "reveille" in the morning, generally near sunrise, though its exact time varies from base to base. On U.S. Army posts, the national flag is raised while reveille is played; on board U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, the flag is generally raised at 0800 (8 am) while the National Anthem or the bugle call "To the Colors" is played. On some U.S. military bases, reveille is accompanied by a cannon shot. As reveille is played (sounded), all uniformed personnel are required to come to attention and present a salute, either to the flag or in the direction of the music if the flag is not visible.

In Commonwealth Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday services, "The Last Post" begins the period of silent reflection, and "Reveille" ends it. The two tunes symbolize sunset and sunrise respectively, and therefore, death and resurrection. ("Reveille" is often replaced by The Rouse, a bugle call commonly mistaken for "Reveille", although these are actually two different tunes.)

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity community service project will be on during this holiday time. This is a very meaningful project as we are helping a needy family to have a new house for home. The house they are staying in now is the one that you can see on the photo....Come and be part of the team that make a difference to their lives.

When you join this community service project, you know what will you receive??? Firstly, the opportunity to help the needy. Secondly, the band of brothers fellowship. Habitat For Humanity Community Service shall be on every Wednesday and Friday 7:45am-12:00pm from next week (01^st Dec is the first one) onwards till Christmas. We would like to extend our warmest invitation to the Pipe Bands of The Boys’ Brigade, Malaysia for the 8th BB Pipes and Drums Festival, which will be held on 27 November 2010, in Singapore.

The BB Pipes and Drums Festival is an annual competition organised primarily for BB Companies. Since its launch in 2003, we have also opened up the competition to Pipe Bands from external organisations. The aim of this Festival is to promote Pipes and Drums music in Singapore through interaction among local Bands and with invited Bands from the region.

Pipes and Drums has been one of the many and varied activities that the BB offers in our curriculum. It has been closely associated with the BB due to our Scottish origin. The Boys’ Brigade is the world’s pioneer uniformed youth organisation, founded on 4th October 1883 in Glasgow, Scotland. In Singapore, the BB was established in January 1930 and is a uniformed youth organisation endorsed by the Ministry of Education. Today, there are more than 7,000 members in 117 BB Companies based in Schools.

We would like to inform you that the participation fee is $100 per Miniature Band, and $15 per soloist. Attached is the registration form for your completion if your band is keen to participate. The birthplace of the Boys' Brigade, the world's first uniformed youth movement with a global membership of 500,000, is to be transformed into town houses.

The birthplace of the Boys' Brigade, the world's first uniformed youth movement with a global membership of 500,000, is to be transformed into town houses.

The Woodside Halls in Glasgow's west end, where Sir William Alexander Smith founded the movement 125 years ago, will be converted into three luxury properties if, as expected, permission is granted by the local planning authority today.

The mid-19th century building was originally the Free Church Mission Hall but has not been in church use since 1975 and the Boys' Brigade had stopped using the facility several years before this.

In more recent years it has been a well-known music venue known as The Woodside Social, although the owners have, in the past, attempted unsuccessfully to turn the halls into a needle exchange for drug users when noise complaints from neighbours resulted in its opening hours being curbed.

The Gothic-design hall is also used as office space.

Although the structure of the building remains intact, the only remaining connection with the Boys' Brigade is a commemorative plaque which, according to the secretary of the historic Glasgow Battalion, Eric Woodburn, still attracts visitors from across the world.

The plan is to convert the B-listed building on North Woodside Road into three three-storey town houses which, according to the report before Glasgow City Council today, "will contribute to the improvement of the Glasgow West Conservation Area".

The plans have generated some opposition from Green councillors and heritage group the Friends of Glasgow West, which fears the "extent and quality of the alterations to this building are inappropriate for its historical importance and do little to respect or acknowledge the integrity of the original design".

Other neighbours have raised the issue of roosting bats although the council insists these are from neighbouring properties.

Mr Woodburn said he would prefer the building was given a living use than be allowed to fall into disrepair.

He said: "The building served its purpose for its time but times change, as do the needs of the organisations using them."

History of the youth movement

* The Boys' Brigade was founded at the Free Church Mission Hall in North Woodside, Glasgow, on October 4, 1883, by Sir William Alexander Smith.

* Although its roots are firmly in Glasgow, Sir William, the son of a military father, hailed from Thurso in Caithness.

* By the early 1890s it was a worldwide organisation and in 2003 had 500,000 members in 60 countries.

* The BB motto "Sure and Steadfast" is derived from Hebrews 6:19 in the Bible: "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast."

* The first one-week camp began on July 16, 1886 at Portavadie in the Kyles of Bute, where the 1st battalion continued going until 1974.

* Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the scouting movement in the 1907, was a vice-president of the BB.

* Past members include Sir Alex Ferguson, Gordon Brown and Ally McCoist.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Recently I've watch a HBO miniseries called Band of Brothers produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Both are acclaimed director and actor respectively. This series is made up of 10 episodes and based on true story during World War II (WWII).

The narrative centers on the experiences of E Company ("Easy Company") of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment assigned to the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army. The series covers Easy's basic training at Toccoa, Georgia, the American airborne landings in Normandy, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of Bastogne and on to the end of the war, including the taking of the Kehlsteinhaus (Hitler's Eagle's Nest).

The events portrayed are based on history research and recorded interviews with Easy Company veterans. A large amount of literary license was taken with the episodes, with several differences between recorded history and the film version.All of the characters portrayed are based on actual members of Easy Company; some of them can be seen in prerecorded interviews as a prelude to each episode (their identities, however, are not revealed until the close of the finale).

The story focus on the spirit of leadership, brotherhood, love, patience and comradeship of the members of the company. I would highly recommend this series for all to watch although the series contain some vulgar language.

Myths on the Festival

Duanwu Festival is traditionally celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar.

Duanwu commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan, he was a loyal minister that served the King of Chu during the Warring States Period in the third century BC. Initially, his sovereign favored Qu Yuan, but over time, his wisdom and erudite ways antagonized the other court officials. And then he was Trumped up a charge of conspiracy, and ejected by his sovereign. During the exile, Qu Yuan made many poems to express his anger and sorrow of his sovereign and people.

In the year 278 B.C., at the age of 37, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Milo River. He clasped a heavy stone to his chest and leaped into the water. Knowing that Qu Yuan was a righteous man, the people of Chu rushed to the river to try to save him. The people desperately searched the waters in their boats looking for Qu Yuan, but they were unsuccessful in their attempt to rescue him. Every year the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated to commemorate this attempt at rescuing Qu Yuan.

When it was known that Qu Yuan had been lost forever, the local people began the tradition of throwing sacrificial cooked rice into the river for their lost hero. However, a local fisherman had a dream that Qu Yuan did not get any of the cooked rice that was thrown into the river in his honor. Instead, it was the fish in the river that had eaten the rice. And so, the locals decided to make zongzi to sink into the river in the hopes that it would reach Qu Yuan's body. The following year, the tradition of wrapping the rice in bamboo leaves to make zongzi began.

There is also another version of the story. When it was known that Qu Yuan had been lost to the river, the local fisherman had a dream that the fish in the river were eating Qu Yuan's body. The local people came up with the idea that if the fish in the river were not hungry, then they would not eat Qu Yuan's body. People thus began throwing zongzi into the river to feed the fish in hope that Qu Yuan's body would be spared.

Yet another version of the story states that Qu Yuan ate the zongzi and rose to the heavens due to the the white rice being so lite that the more he ate the quicker he began to float, ultimately joining with the great god Buddha in the clouds (known as the yonguan song, or Floating Rice Man). The tradition continues to this day, where one fortunate person from the Forbidden City will strap a heavy rock to their chest and, after leaping head first into the ocean, will attempt to eat the zongzi the other festival goers throw at him while he sinks to the bottom of the sea. Only twice in the history of this festival has anyone every risen after eating the rice, typically many sharks and swordfish gather days before the festival in anticipation of this great feast of rice, beans and people.

Activities

Three of the most widespread activities for Duanwu Festival are eating (and preparing) zongzi, drinking realgar wine, and racing dragon boats.

Other common activities include hanging up icons of Zhong Kui (a mythic guardian figure), hanging mugwort and calamus, taking long walks, and wearing perfumed medicine bags. Other traditional activities include a game of making an egg stand at noon, and writing spells. All of these activities, together with the drinking of realgar wine, were regarded by the ancients as effective in preventing disease or evil and promoting health and well-being.

In the early years of the Republic of China period, Duanwu was also celebrated as "Poets' Day," due to Qu Yuan's status as China's first poet of well renown. In modern Taiwan, zongzi are no longer thrown into rivers, but people still eat them as a holiday tradition and testament to Qu Yuan's self-determination.

The 2009 Boys' Brigade in Malaysia statistics has just been released at the recent BCM in Tawau, Sabah. Here's some information which may interest you:

The Largest State is Sarawak with 3130 members which is 35% of the whole country. Sarawak has 34 companies which also makes them the state with the largest number of companies.

The Smallest State is Melaka with 191 members. Melaka has 4 companies.

The Largest Company also comes from the state of Sarawak with a total of 508 members, that's about 2.5 times the membership of Melaka state, the company is 1st Sibu.

Other companies with large membership are 3rd Sibu (455), 1st JB (363), 2nd Manjung (349) and 8th Penang (302).

The Smallest Company comes from Sabah with 11 members, 9th Kota Kinabalu, other companies with less then 20 members are 10th Kota Kinabalu (19), 1st Sri Aman (18), 3rd Kampar (18), 1st Butterworth (16) and 1st Sepang (16).

The Largest Junior Section is from 3rd Sibu with 345 members. Other companies with large junior section are 5th Sandakan (185) and 2nd Sandakan (155)

The Best Average Membership per company is Perak with an average of 124 members per company. Kuala Lumpur (105), Johor (100), Sarawak (94), Penang (82), Selangor (75), Sabah (68) and Melaka (48).

Are we drowned in history ?

A former Pastor once asked the then Captain of 1st Penang Company:

"Is the BB to continue in this church for the sake of sentimental reasons?"

The Captain replied frankly: "Yes and No."

"Yes", because this is the first BB company in Malaysia and the launching pad for other BB companies in Malaysia.

"No", because we cannot live in the past glory, but to move forward to higher ground. This ministry is proven to be effective even now in the era of high technology and modern living.

Indeed, we need to keep asking ourselves this question. Are we sticking around in BB purely for sentimental reasons? No doubt, it could be partly due to sentimental reasons, friendship or comradeship; but we need to also remind ourselves that there is still a higher ground, a higher goal and a higher calling; more importantly, we are all still in the race to strive forward.

Let us take a moment to think about this question, re-aligned our priorities and motivations, re-energised and move forward as a company.

You are expected to bring your own drinking water, food and all necessary things for the field trip. Bring RM 5 for the entrance fees to the Semenggoh Wild Life Centre and RM5 for the return bus fares.
Bring along your note book for recording during the field trip, and also the compass.
You are expected to practice what you have learnt during the nature awareness classes, including wild life watching techniques. You shall need to sketch the flora and fauna during the trip. All these shall form part of the assessment.
You are required to do a research on the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre. The research should include the flora and fauna within the Centre. You need to submit the research during the nature awareness class on the 27th June, 2009. The research should not be direct copy from the internet. They are to be summarized in point forms.

The Officers Council has decided to allow the members to wear short pants during non-uniform parades. Thus, starting from 30th May 2009 onwards, all members are allowed to wear company t-shirt with short pants or long pants, depends on your preferences.

However, in certain situations, there will be a need to wear company t-shirt with long pants. The officers will inform all members if such situation arises.

My friends were serving in a ministry that was directed mainly to Christians when an opportunity came for them to change jobs and touch the lives of thousands of nonbelievers. They decided to make what they believed to be an exciting change.

Many people, even some who didn’t personally know them, were shocked and accused them of seeking fame and fortune in the world. But believing that Jesus came “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10), they decided to pursue what they considered an even greater opportunity to serve the “lost” in their community.

They said later, “Some Christians were so cruel to us, and wrote hateful e-mails. Our new non-Christian friends were kinder to us than our fellow Christians. We didn’t understand that, and were hurt deeply.” They told me that their desire was to follow God’s directive to be “salt” and “light” in the world (Matt. 5:13-14).

When someone we know is making a decision or change, it can be helpful to ask about his or her motives. But we can’t fully know another’s heart. We don’t want to “bite and devour” our fellow Christians (Gal. 5:15), but instead to love them in a way that others will know we are Jesus’ followers (John 13:35). 走过大自然

所谓“自然”就是自然发展，不经人力干预。那么，“大自然”是什么呢？是更加地自由发挥？还是自然中的自然呢？… …

我们，古晋男少年军第八分队的十位“小小探险家”（expedition class）拥有过这么一次的经历。就在三月十五日的那一天… …

星期日早上，大约八点钟，一辆长途巴士已经行驶在一条高速公路上。里面坐着十位‘小瓜’，正是我们。那时，巴士行驶的那条高速公路，正是前往伦乐的路途。我们不时地望一望窗外，到处都是绿油油的森林，也有一些村庄，店屋，学校等；望向远处，还可看到不少山丘，被一层层的云围绕着，远远望着山峰，仿佛就像一座空岛一样。

过了大约一小时半… … “奇怪？怎么不是直接去到Gunung Gading 吗? 怎么只到了伦乐的市场就要下车了呢？”我慌张地说着。“当然不是，我们得先在这儿“做侦探”呢，然后再走三公里的路到Gunung Gading。瞧你那背包，你有的受了”组长回答了我。

天哪！我的背包可是排上了最重排行榜中的第二名呢！这不是偏偏折腾我吗？没办法，只好硬着头皮冲吧！

大约半小时后，千辛万苦，终于来到Gunung Gading 了。我们在那儿租了三间房间，一进到房间的第一件事当然是把这个“虐待”我已久的背包给整理一顿。等下可要走十几多公里的路呢，哪能背得这么重？整理完毕！吃过午餐后，便开始爬山了。现在觉得整个人轻飘飘似的。“吃得苦中苦，方为轻上轻”啊。

我们先来到Gunung Gading里的瀑布的第一站，在Gunung Gading的瀑布分为3站，第一站，第三站及第七站。来到了第一站后，便小息一会儿。第一站的瀑布没什么观点，不如第七站的。

“我们走捷径回去吧。”组长说。我们便选了另一条路走回去。因为那条路长满了青苔，路也很斜，好不容易走，有好几个人也险中“头奖”，掉进水里。“大家不要怕，跟着… …”组长还没说完话，已经先中了“头奖”。我们的其中一位组员见况，便去拉他起来。哪知，他们却来了个“干坤大挪移发”，组长被扶起，反倒那位组员中了“次奖”。

没办法，我们只好走回原来的路，继续赶路。这次我们便想要爬到第七站的瀑布。走了一段路，开始累了，脚下的步伐也越来越迟缓了。望着这“无尽头”的路程，不免冒了几颗豆大的冷汗。但是，皇天不负有心人？五十分钟后，我们 … … 我们 … … 抵达了 … … 做的目的地！我们来到了 Sesco Dam, 一片平静的湖。细密的雨落了下来，掉到水里，溅起了小小的水花，很是漂亮。

休息一会儿后，又走了大约一小时的路程，终于来到了瀑布第七站。大伙儿已经累垮了。我们在那儿的一个小亭子休息着，看看风景，望着这毫无瑕疵的流水，缤纷多彩的花丛，“哗啦啦”的旋律。令人精神为之一振，似乎豁然开朗起来，之前来时所带来疲累和烦躁，立刻被抛到九霄云外。

下午二时半左右，我们便开始回程，越往下走，路越陡峭。虽然下山不会累，脚却时时会产生刺痛，因为每踏下一步，都有由下而来的极大冲击力。但凭着一颗坚决的心，我们还是回到了住宿。

洗澡过后，脚一阵阵的刺痛渐渐消失了。我们便赶到了一件建在伦乐的教会守圣安息，因为当天是星期日，去到那儿，我们已经迟到了半小时，但是我们还是硬着头皮“爬”了进去。之后，我们便享用了我们的晚餐，然后也有一段短短的分享及娱乐。直到晚上，便去会周公，跟他叙说我们这一天的经历了。

现在回想起来，我们所经过的“风风雨雨”，不免有些赞叹，赞叹这位全能的造物者的上帝的奇妙创作。这些花草，一切昆虫，一切奇形怪状的生物，这些美的让人如痴如醉的景色，这大自然！这些创造已经在彰显着上帝的全能。这些上帝创造的… … 大自然！

On the 26th of April 2009, squad 1 and squad 5 were having a squad outing to Annah Rais Hot Spring. There were 9 person of us, including two officers—Lt. Ngu and Lt. Voon. It took about an hour to reach the venue. Of course we were told to pay a group fees before we entered the hot spring. The hot spring was extremely hot! None of us dared to enter that ‘hot bowl’. So, we just played around there. After that, we were having our lunch there too. We brought some food and snacks to share with the others. Although the food were mainly ‘keropok’, but we enjoyed ourselves there. Hopefully we can do another squad outing soon.

Nothing Left But God

A wise Bible teacher once said, “Sooner or later God will bring self-sufficient people to the place where they have no resource but Him—no strength, no answers, nothing but Him. Without God’s help, they’re sunk.”

He then told of a despairing man who confessed to his pastor, “My life is really in bad shape.” “How bad?” the pastor inquired. Burying his head in his hands, he moaned, “I’ll tell you how bad—all I’ve got left is God.” The pastor’s face lit up. “I’m happy to assure you that a person with nothing left but God has more than enough for great victory!”

In today’s Bible reading, the people of Judah were also in trouble. They admitted their lack of power and wisdom to conquer their foes. All they had left was God! But King Jehoshaphat and the people saw this as reason for hope, not despair. “Our eyes are upon You,” they declared to God (2 Chron. 20:12). And their hope was not disappointed as He fulfilled His promise: “The battle is not yours, but God’s” (v.15).

Are you in a position where all self-sufficiency is gone? As you turn your eyes on the Lord and put your hope in Him, you have God’s reassuring promise that you need nothing more.

If you don't know the reason why your streamyx connection has become ridiculously slow lately, below is the notice released by Telekom Malaysia just to ease your frustration:

Dear Valued Customers,

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wishes to announce that there is a disruption of its Internet services due to circuit faults on the SMW3 between Tuas, Singapore and Penang linking Malaysia to Hong Kong and APCN2 near Chongming, China connecting Malaysia to the United States. As a result, customers using the Internet services may experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in the U.S. and Hong Kong.

In addition, customers using other IP services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to the U.S. and Hong Kong may also experience some service degradation.

To alleviate the problem, some of the links have been rerouted to alternate routes to ease the congestion.

Restoration works on the affected cables are already in progress. However, during the restoration process, traffic to Northern America and Hong Kong may experience degradation. However, traffic to other countries will not be affected. TM expects complete recovery of its services by 5 April 2009 and will make further announcements on the progress of the restoration works.

TM wishes to assure its customers that it is undertaking all necessary measures to restore communications services for its customers as soon as possible.

Squad 3 Outing Sharing

On 21st March (Friday), my squad went to play bowling at BDC. We divided into two groups. Captain Wong, Pte Jeeu Pin, Recruit Alton and me(Wilson Yeo) in 1 group. And Pte Thomas, Pte Julius, Pte Chung Seng and Julius’s friend in the other group. We play for 3 rounds, the first round is for warm up and the other 2 round is a competition between the 2 group .We have a tie at the end of the game. My squad has a good time playing bowling and I hope that we can play with other squad.

Sorry for giving you the activity project late.

This is going to be a fun project. This project is call NATURE WALK. The project shall take 7 days, starting on Friday, 27th Feb 2009. I shall give you the details for each day the day before. So you need to check your email. As for Pte Jeeu Ping, Sgt Chung Zheng How please pass the details to him.

Have you all finish your assignment I gave you on the first class? I hope you have not forgotton...Is about doing the map of the school.....right? You shall need to present the school map and the Nature Walk activities in your own group during the next class. Oh...also remember the note book you are suppose to get one for my award class..........better not forget, or else.....

OK, now my requirement for the class......this is the serious part....... I shall assess each one of you after every nature awareness award class. If you fail, I shall need to ask you to stop the award class. Assessment for each class is based on two criteria only:

a) satisfactorily completing your assignments/tasks given to you the class before.
b) your effort to learn/do/participate during the class, meaning your attitude, attentivemess, cooperation, participation....etc..

At the end of each class, I shall let you know whether you have pass the class and can move on to the next class.

Lastly, I like to introduce my assistant for the nature awareness class - Lt. Voon. She is going to help me to help you all to be more aware of our natural environment.....

Message from the Captain

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The recruitment team guided by Lt. Charles have carried out two recruitment, one at Chung Hua Secondary No.4 yesterday and one at Chung hua Primary No.6 today. The team did very well indeed. I am very encouraged by their initiatives and committment. They are brave and willing to try and tried their best too. The senior boys have grown up a lot indeed, they are young men now.....

This Friday is the recruitment at Sungai Maong. From what I have seen, I believe they are going to do a fantastic job. Let us all pray for them and the recruiment drive, especially for good weather. God has blessed us with good seather on Tuesday when they went for the recruitment at Chung Hua Secondary No.4 (all other days raining...). Thanks for your prayers. Let us continue to pray for the same good weather on friday.

For officers, I like to encourage you all to join the adult sunday school, TOP 1, 2, 3. Let us not forget to feed ourselves with the words of God and grow, as only love for God can sustain us in the ministry of BB. Lt. Lee Mang and Lt. Ker Hui are joining the Disciplechip 2. I am joining the Discipleship 1. Let us all grow together this year. Come and join the weekly prayer meet on Thursday nights. Every week I look forward to 3 day - Thurday night, Saturday and Sunday. Praying together with all the brothers and sisters in church is a very peaceful and joyful experience. Please come.

2008 Company Annual Camp

Camping has becomes part of BB tradition. Back to the year 1886, the 1st Glasgow company held its first summer camp at the small town of Tighnabruaich, which situated across the Isle of Bute at the Kyles of Bute.

As was tradition the Boys marched in full uniform to the Broomielaw to catch the paddle steamer "Columba" and sail down the River Clyde to Tighnabruaich. The camp was run with the same strict discipline as on parade nights and the uniform was worn at all times unlike in later years when there was a more relaxed informal atmosphere.

The Bugle

The bugle is one of the simplest brass instruments; having no valves or other pitch-altering devices. All pitch control is done by varying the player's embouchure, since the bugle has no other mechanism for controlling pitch. Consequently, the bugle is limited to notes within the harmonic series. Standard bugle calls consist of only five notes.

History
The bugle developed from early musical or communication instruments made of animal horns, with the word "bugle" itself coming from "buculus", Latin for bullock (castrated bull). The first bugles developed as hunting horns. They were shaped in a coil - typically a double coil - similar to the modern French horn, and were used to communicate during hunts and as announcing instruments for coaches. Predecessors and relatives of the developing bugle included the post horn, the Pless horn and the bugle horn.

The first verifiable formal use of a brass horn as military signal device was the Halbmondblaser - literally, "half moon blower" - used ini Hanover in 1758. It was U-shaped and comfortably carried by a shoulder strap attached at the mouthpiece and bell. It first spread to England in 1764, where it was gradually accepted widely in foot regiments. Cavalry did not formally use a proper bugle, but rather an early trumpet that might be mistaken for a bugle today, as it lacked keys or valves, but had a more gradual taper and a smaller bell, producing a sound more easily audible at close range but with less carrying power over distance.

The bugle is used mainly in the military where the Bugle call is used to indicate the daily routines of camp. Historically the bugle was used in the cavalry to relay instructions from officers to soldiers during battle.

In the drum and bugle corps the bugle has evolved away from its military origins, growing valves. In American drum and bugle corps, G is considered the traditional key for bugles to be pitched in. However, current rules in both Drum Corps International and Drum Corps Associates define a bugle as a brass instrument in any key, with 0 to 4 valves, and bell-front in the manner of a trumpet. Typically, drum corps brass is in G or B flat, with mellophones in B flat brass lines being in the key of F due to ease of tuning for that particular horn.

Civilian drum corps were founded using equipment sold off by the military in the early 1900s, and the last official change made to the military bugle (before its role as a signaling device was rendered obsolete by the radio) was to standardize them in the key of G. Bugles in other parts of the world typically were pitched in B flat or E flat.

What is Color?

In military organization, the practice of carrying colors or standards, to act both as a rallying point for troops and to mark the location of the commander, is thought have originated in ancient Egpyt some 5,000 years ago. It was formalized in the armies if medieval Europe, with standards being emblazoned with the commander's coat of arms.

As time passed, Regiments were awarded battle honors, which they emblazoned on the Colors, Standards and Guidons. They therefore became a link to the Regiment's past and a memorial to the fallen, and thus took on a more mystical significance than as mere identifying markers on the battlefield. Such became the significance in this context that, for a regiment to lose its colors was a major disgrace with the capture of an enemy's colors being seen as a great honor. This is why that, whenever the colors are paraded, they are always escorted by armed guards and paid the highest compliments by all soldiers and officers.

In British Army usage, the colors efers to either the flags carried by infantry units and which carry the unit's name, badges, achievements and battle honors. Military personnels always accord the color the greatest respect and salute them when carried uncased. Colors represent pride of a regimental unit, whether in the army, air force or navy. The concept of colors originated from the Middle Ages when lords and barons would lead their men to battles. In modern days, although colors no longer appear on the battlefield, they remain objects of respect and many of the traditions started during the Middle Ages still exist today.

Colors are consecrated. Consequently, they can serve as an altar for a drumhead service. There are never capriciously destroyed - when too old to use they are replaced and then laid-up in a regimental chapel to moulder unto dust.

Etiquette

The company flag is always paraded whenever the company is on a formal parade. However, the company color is only paraded on certain occassions.
Compliments (saluting or presenting arms) are always paid to the uncased colors.

When the colors are paraded, they are carried by warrant officer, dependent on the brigade. On parade, the color always have an armed escort, the Color Party, who would normally be non-commissioned officers. In the infantry, this role usually falls to Color Sergeants.

When the colors are no being paraded, most brigades house them in their Officers' Mess. They are cased and secured every night.
When a brigade is presented with new colors, the old colors, which will now never again be paraded, are laid up in place sacred to the brigade.
